The work reflects on the studies and theories of Elfreda Annmary Chatman. It presents the author's contributions to Information Science in the field of Information User Studies, especially within the scope of the social approach identified in some studies by the concept of informational practices. This is a bibliographical, exploratory, qualitative research, developed from the author's publications and specialized literature in the area of Information Science. The main results indicate that Chatman introduced relevant concepts to the social approach of User Studies by focusing on the search for information in everyday life, considering the individual inserted in a certain context and circumstance. Such findings corroborate what Savolainen (1995) identified as a perspective of informational practices, which encompass cultural, social, political and situational dimensions, limited in some circumstances by the conditions of access, appropriation and use of information.
