Abstract

This article presents the full transcription of a ship’s log manuscript about the ship Nossa Senhora da Conceição, Princess of Portugal. The document records the ship’s travel between 1783 and 1785, departing from Lisbon, through Atlantic and Indian islands towards India and ending, unexpectedly, towards Bahia. Available online at Arquivo Nacional da Torre do Tombo, the logbook was read and transcribed. Subsequently, we catalog its crew and create a glossary of marine terms found in the ship’s log and a chronology of the events. The analysis allowed us to raise relevant questions, such as the ship’s hierarchy and its relationship with the tensions between the different members of the crew. Therefore, the importance of the article occurs in the provision of a rich material in order to expand the history of the seamen in the eighteenth century, especially against the tiny development of maritime history in Brazil
