Abstract

This study aims at providing foreign language teachers as well as applied linguistics with an investigation about how the Autism Spectrum disorder may affect the communicative competence of a learner who is affected by this disorder. For this, there is an introduction about the necessary competences a language teacher must have in order to promote the inclusion of autistic learners into his- her practice. A little sketch about the history of the Autism Spectrum Disorder relating it to the concept of communicative competence was done. Therefore, it was realized how the spectrum features like weak central coherence and gaps in theory of mind may affect the communicative competence of an autistic learner. Through a qualitative data analysis, involving an interview with an English teacher and a learner in the autism spectrum, it was verified that there is the need of more studies relating the autism spectrum and the foreign language teaching for an improvement of the  foreign language teachers’ applied competence and that the autism spectrum influences straight some subcompetences of communicative competence.
