Familiar LGBTQIAPN+phobia in official records: an analysis of data in the State of Sergipe prior to the criminalization of homophobia in Brazil

In this article, familial LGBTQIAPN+phobia is discussed based on official records from occurrence bulletins (BO) at police stations of the Public Security Department of the State of Sergipe (SSP/SE) between 2015 and 2018, a period preceding the criminalization approval in Brazil. Examining 14 cases of violence against LGBTQIAPN+ individuals perpetrated by the victims' parents, the study investigates the manifestations, key characteristics, and consequences of these acts of violence. Drawing comparisons with recent theoretical works, the inquiry explores the continuities and/or changes in the landscape of familial LGBTQIAPN+phobia following the criminalization of such behavior. In 2019, the criminalization of LGBTQIAPN+phobia in Brazil was sanctioned; however, various obstacles to its institutional recognition are observed (BULGARELLI et al., 2021). Notably, the relativization of hate speech in the name of freedom of expression, a conduct encouraged by religious entities and conservative political leaders, adds to the social hierarchies that traditionally shape the family domain.
