ON THE EMOTIONAL ELEMENT IN RELIGIOUS EXPERIENCE ACCORDING TO RUDOLF OTTO
Abstract
The article intends to stress the central role given to the
religious emotion, related to the so-called “feeling of the
numinous”, in Rudolf Otto’s conception of the experience of the
sacred. Especial emphasis is also given to the aspects of his
conception that are at odds with the empiricist-naturalist approach
of religious emotion. These aspects are grounded, primarily, on a
phenomenology of the sacred, and they implicitly require a specific
form of ontology, in order to ground the notion of the wholly other,
essentially related to the idea of a feeling of the numinous
