Abstract

This article is a report by Pierre Caye on the translation of Leon Battista Alberti's De re aedificatoria from Latin into French made by him in partnership with Françoise Choay.  The translation, entitled L'Art d'édifier , was published in 2004 by Maison du Seuil.  The following text recalls the routine that involved the translators during the fifteen years spent on the job, in which weekly meetings were held to compare the same translated passages that, subjected to scrutiny, offered the basis for a consensual result. During the years employed in this work, a network of collaboration was built with the participation of specialists in Leon Battista Alberti, consolidating perennial partnerships. The article presents a reflection on translation, possibles methodological paths and approximates the work of the translator to a construction site, similar to the Albertian discourse.

Author Biographies

Pierre Caye, Researcher at the CNRS (Centre Nationale de la Recherche Scientifique) and director of the Centre Jean Pepin.

The philosopher Pierre Caye is research director at the Centre National de Recherce Scientifique (CNRS). His work covers topics in the history and theory of architecture, with particular attention to Vitruvius' treatise and the production of the period between the 15th and 18th centuries. His recent publications include Durer. Éléments pour la transformation du système productif [Durer. Elements for the transformation of the productive system] (2020); Critique de la destruction créative . Humanisme et production [Critique of creative destruction. Humanism and production] (2015); Morale et chaos . Principes d'un agir sans fondements (2009), among others. He is director of the Centre Jean Pepin, dedicated to the study of ancient doctrines and their repercussions on the European cultural tradition from the Renaissance to the Enlightenment. He was awarded the French Academy Prize in 1996 and the Academy of Moral Sciences and Politics Prize in 2009.

Elane Ribeiro Peixoto, Universidade de Brasília; Faculdade de Arquitetura e Urbanismo; Programa de Pós-graduação em Arquitetura e Urbanismo

Professor at the University of Brasilia, Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism. Her research covers themes in the area of Theory, History and Criticism, including the translation of texts of interest to this area. Assuming translation as a dialogue between cultures, she was responsible for the translation from French to Portuguese of Henri-Pierre Jeudy's Travelling the City [Courir la ville, 2002] and Aloïs Riegl's Le culte moderne des monuments son essence et sa genèse (1903) , published in French in 2013. She is currently translating the entries signed by Françoise Choay and published in the Dictionnaire d'urbanisme et de l'aménagement (2015), a work that the historian of ideas directed in partnership with Pierre Merlin. This translation is one of the results of Elane Peixoto's postdoctoral work carried out at the Postgraduate Programme in Urbanism of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (PROURB), under the supervision of Margareth da Silva Pereira, with support from CNPq.
