Abstract

This text by Choay was originally written for the Nara Conference on Authenticity, organizes by UNESCO and the Agency for Cultrual Affairs of Japan. It is a relevant writing due to the rigor of the analysis on the term authenticity, which plays a fundamental role in the criteria for World Heritage but whose definition remains imprecise. Choay highlights  that the various disciplinary fields should operate from a univocal definition and epistemological questioning of the concepts they use. It is through this valuable exercise that she revisits the history of the concept of authenticity in Western culture and explores its possible connections and implications in the present.

Françoise Choay is a historian and professor who works on issues related to architecture, urbanism, and the preservation of cultural heritage.

This translation sought to stay as close as possible to the original in terms of the construction of the reasoning, phrasing, and vocabulary used by Choay.  The foreign terms used  by the author have been kept in the original language to bring Brazilian readers closer to the experience that Choay’s readers have in various cultural contexts through the UNESCO book. All footnotes and references have been retained as they appear in the original, without adapting them to Brazilian standards.

Author Biographies

Françoise Choay, Ex -professora do Centre Experimental de Vincennes ; Departamento de Urbanismo; ex-professora na Université de Leuven

Philosopher, historian of ideas, art and architecture critic. She has been writing about architecture and urbanism since 1956 and has authored books that have become references for professionals in the field. Among her best-known publications are L’Urbanisme, utopies et réalités. Une anthologie (1965) ; La Règle et le Modéle (1980) and L'Allegorie du patrimoine (1992). She directed the collection Espacements from 1976-1985 for the publisher Seuil, promoting the translation of foreign authors into French. She was a professor at the Département d'urbanisme of the Centre Expérimental de Vincennes (1971) and at the University of Leuven. Her books and articles have been translated into several languages. As a translator, she worked in partnership with Pierre Merlin to translate Leon Batista Alberti's De re aedificatoria from Latin into French. She collaborated in the creation of the Rivista  Albertiana (1998) linked to the Istituto Italiano per gli Studi Filosofici. She is the author of several articles.

Full Professor (2017) at the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism of the University of São Paulo (FAUUSP), Department of History of Architecture and Aesthetics of Design, institution where she joined as a professor in 1998. She holds a degree in Architecture and Urbanism from FAUUSP (1987), a master's degree from Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (1992), Belgium, a PhD from FAUUSP (1996) and a post-doctorate from Sapienza Università di Roma (2001; 2005). She coordinated one of the research axes of the Preventive Conservation Plan for the Vilanova Artigas Building (FAUUSP), Keeping It Modern programme - Getty Foundation (07.2015-03.2018). She was Head of Department (AUH-FAUUSP) from November 2015 to November 2019. She was part of the USP working groups - initially Paulista Museum Working Group 2022, later Ipiranga Museum Steering Committee 2022 - with a view to the reopening of the Ipiranga Museum (2016-2022). She is dedicated to disciplines of preservation of cultural assets, both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Her research addresses theoretical and methodological issues of restoration, with special interest in industrial heritage. She has published several books - among them Arquitetura do ferro e arquitetura ferroviária em São Paulo (São Paulo, Ateliê/FAPESP/SEC, 1998), Preservação do patrimônio arquitetônico da industrialização (Ateliê/FAPESP, 2009, 2nd ed. 2018) - as well as articles.
